Why Things Move The Way They Do

Room 3 have been looking at Isaac Newton's Three Laws of Motion.  During our investigations, we have discovered that air resistance opposes motion.  This means it makes things that are moving stop or slow down.  We created parachutes to take advantage of this, aiming for them to catch as much air as possible in order to descend as slowly as possible.  It was quite an adventure!

Environmental Writing

Here is some of the exceptional writing that has come out of Room 3 lately...

Ben.JPG
The caramel chocolate mix acorn hides inside it’s shell. The acorn peers, waiting for a crack in his armour to break free. The outer layer is as protected as a turtle shell.  The oval nut sleeps as the days go by without a care in the world. The core of the nut is untouched. He longs to go back to where he originated from. Groaning as his hard hat has fallen off. It falls to the ground like a stone. The acorn glistens in the light.

Tired and lonely I lay with regret as the rain slowly pours down on me. Patiently I wait for the air to drift me away like wind blowing down carefully across the sea.
All I can see is long wet grass standing tall and proud as I lay there, tired and wounded.
All I can hear is water slowly dripping off me like an athlete's sweat of the side of his head.
Fatal and destroyed  I float as the sun slowly shines down on me.

Kalim.JPG
I observe the solid jagged rock as it glistens in the sunlight. It looks like it’s freshly polished. I glare at the different layers in on the rock. Rock then greenstone then shimmering crystals it is as hard as a brick. I slide my hand across the rough surface. My hand goes across so easy like a water slide.

Jarden.JPGThe exposed  tiny oval shape is smooth and shiny.  It's caramely broken shell is just like a guardian piece of coated chocolate. Its uncovered torn crack is rough like stepping off a pile of stones. Its shell is as shiny as a piece of gold.  I wonder what he is going to do when his faithful guardian is defeated.  The touch of its lumpy luxurious skin is as delicate as a new born baby.

The Leaf Warrior
Old and withering, the brave soldier gets ready for battle.  Suddenly, clouds cram the sky and unleash powerful blasts of wind. The helpless leaf stares, as warriors flutter to the ground and its army falls to bits. The wind howls, slicing innocent leaves off their branches. Constantly, leaves give up and are sent to the sea of leaves  below. The experienced soldier begins to weaken but refuses to let go. Slowly, the out stretched arms of the trees reliable branches start to loosen and its grasp grows weaker. The vicious wind growls persistently. Finally, the vulnerable leaf forfeits and floats to its grave as swiftly as a fatigued feather.
C - C - C - R - RACK!  A final clap of jagged lightning, violent thunder and screaming wind scares the last warriors to their doom.  Then, without warning, the friendly sun squints through the grey clouds and a positive blue explodes in the sky. Happiness shines down on the delicate and disintegrating leaves. Fortunately, the war is over. Jack Frost sprinkles a white blanket of ice as sparkly as diamonds-Winter has begun.

How far?

Today we used scales to measure distances on maps of our hometown Te Aroha:

  • First we used the map to measure from our house to the school using the scale at the bottom of the map.

  • Secondly we crosschecked this using the 'measure distance' feature on Google Maps to compare the distances and see how close we got.

  • Thirdly we measured our school to the town clock.  It was pretty hard.

  • Then we shared all our data into a Class Doc in Google Sheets.

  • We then helped our groups to finish their work..

  • Then we had to write this reflection:

Environmental Writing

This week we did some environmental writing.
Here is a short video of our class focused on their writing.
We have been using an app called Relax Melodies during writing time.
That is the music you can hear playing in the background.
It helps us concentrate and also stops Mrs Horan from interrupting us
and distracting us from our writing.  :)

To Mine or Not to Mine?

Following the senior trip to the Martha Mine in Waihi, Room 3 have been looking at a mine a little closer to home.  The Tui Mine has been the focus of local interest for a range of reasons.  We are exploring the impact of this abandoned mine on the different people our community.

Poppy Art

Poppies are used to commemorate soldiers who died fighting in WW1.  Today we began painting poppies by mixing warm colours and blending them to highlight light and dark.  We listened to our audiobook, Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo whilst sketching and painting today.  It was calm and peaceful in the classroom while the students worked on their art and it will be great to see the finished work very soon!

Room 3 bowled over with World Cup Fever!!!

Room 3 were inspired by our fantastic Black Caps today.  They tried out their bowling and batting skills with the school cricket gear.  We looked at keeping a straight arm when bowling and defending the wickets when batting.  Here are some shots of them in action:

Studyladder

Today the students received their Studyladder logins (which they keep in the back of their Maths books.  This site is great for students to practice their skills in key curriculum areas and have fun whilst doing it!  Take a look through with your child and feel free to come in and ask any questions about it.  I have set some relevant Mathematics tasks to get the students started.

Senior School Singing

On Fridays at 12.30pm an amazing sound rings out across Te Aroha, it comes from the lounge in Room 3 where we host Senior Syndicate Singing with the students from the students from the other senior classes.
I was surprised to hear the students of Room 3 tell me last before our first singing that they "don't like singing". I'm pretty sure they have changed their minds now they have experienced what senior school singing is all about!

Colourful Names

Room 3 have started an art project with Mrs Horan which will display their names in an exciting, colourful way.  Here are some pictures of us working on them.  Watch this space, we will post again when they are finished!

Mihi

In Room 3 we have been learning how to say and write our Mihi.  These involve individuals standing to introduce themselves by sharing their whakapapa (genealogy, ancestral ties) and other relevant information. It is important for Māori to know and to share their whakapapa - to know one’s whakapapa is to know one’s identity.

Check out the latest foyer display that showcases our learning!

Creating our Class Treaty

Today the students in Room 3 discussed the principles underpinning the Treaty of Waitangi:
  • Governance
  • Self Management
  • Equality
  • Cooperation
  • Redress
We looked at how these principles can play a part in our Class Treaty to create a learning environment we are all happy to work in.
